Job Description
A successful candidate is someone who will be a mentor/resource to KREM’s MSJs and Photojournalists/Editors, be an integral part of the station’s big coverage plans, balance multiple projects, several deadlines, pay close attention to details, be a good communicator and uphold high journalistic standards to get our news on-air and to our digital platforms. This is an exempt/salary position that reports to the Assistant News Director.
Responsibilities:
- Collaboratively develop and refine visual standard best practices, trainings and department workflows
- Provide feedback and mentorship to team/direct reports on regular basis
- Creative storytelling with the highest journalistic standards
- Lead photojournalism team in planning and execution for special coverage (i.e. sweeps, elections, sports, community events and field anchoring)
- Train new MSJs and Photojournalists/Editors on gear and systems specific to those jobs and let leadership know when those new team members are ready to work independently in the field
- Be main person on content team to oversee satellite and microwave truck operations
- Manage gear for MSJs and Photojournalists/Editors
- Be main person on content team to oversee technology updates for MSJs and Photojournalists/Editors
- Serve as liaison with KREM’s Operations Supervisor on status of station’s vehicle fleet
- Maintain video archive system for content team
- Be an active member of day-to-day content generation in the field
- Be able to step in and help with show editing when needed
- Operate news gathering vehicle to and from various locations
- Collaborate with fellow news leaders to celebrate team’s success and address performance concerns
- Oversee scheduling for direct reports
- Be part of team that sources candidates for open positions
- Perform other tasks as required by leadership team
Job Requirements:
- 5+ years experience required
- College degree in relevant field and/or relevant training and certification history
- Self-motivated leader with proven problem-solving abilities
- Commitment to continuing to foster a culture of teamwork, collaboration and innovation
- Keen knowledge and interest in emerging technologies and industry best practices
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills and organizational skills
- Ability to make quick, sound, ethical decisions while working under strict deadlines
- Willingness to work overtime, flexible shifts, and holidays as needed
- Strong computer skills in a mobile environment
- Ability to multi-task and juggle high-profile projects with attention-to-detail
- Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor
