Job Description

The Lighting Designer will function as the head of the lighting department both from a technical and creative aspect.  This position is responsible for working closely with the Show Director on all show lighting designs including planning and programming.  The Lighting Designer will be responsible for creating documentation to create a consistent reproduction of the “show” look.  This position will also be responsible for managing and maintaining the lighting inventory for their assigned productions.

Your Role Accountabilities...

LIVE/TAPED PRODUCTIONS
  • Partners directly with the Production and Operations’ teams along with Directors, Producers, Engineers, and other Production Crew to prepare lighting needs for assigned live studio and/or remote productions
  • Lead, manage and instruct all lighting show staff on creative direction for all assigned productions
  • Assess, advise, and assist with the proper stage, scenic and lighting set-ups
  • During the live/taped production of the show, actively monitor the show lighting plus instruct, manage, and supervise all lighting show staff to ensure a successful shows
  • Lead lighting technology decisions and research around new product selections
  • Design lighting for in studio and remote productions
  • Create and manage lighting plots for studio and remote productions
COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION
  • Proactively provides creative ideas/enhancements to production
  • Proactively provides recommendations of the newest lighting technology to enhance productions
  • Collaborates with Lighting Console Operators for proper management of all lighting control programming and show file organization
  • Assists to ensure our inventory is maintained, accounted for, and stored when not in use, along with any other lighting needs
  • Collaborates with Production Management and Technical Operations to identify and special order any equipment needed for studio productions
PLANNING RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide show lighting designs, including all plots, patch list, fixture labels, load schedules, dimmer patches, magic charts, and other documentation as expected
  • Create and manage all CAD based lighting plots for all live productions at Techwood Studios
  • Manage the inventory of all house lighting equipment which includes ensuring that all lighting equipment is in good working order and scheduling repairs as needed
  • Consult with Production, Technical Operations and Production Operations on Capital Expenditures and rentals, including testing/evaluation new equipment
  • Stay ahead of new technology that can improve our Productions
Qualifications & Experiences...
  • 8 – 10 years of network level broadcast production experience creating plots and leading teams to execute the lighting of studio and remote (on location) productions
  • In-depth knowledge of current industry standards
  • Current ETCP Entertainment Electrician Certification
  • Comprehensive understanding of the GrandMA control systems and completion of in person MA user training and advanced user training
  • In-depth experience in the application of various lighting techniques using a variety of fixtures for broadcast production
  • In-depth knowledge of AC power systems including proper distribution and load balancing
  • In-depth working knowledge with the use of intelligent lighting fixtures
  • In-depth working knowledge of control system networking for entertainment technology
  • Able to design and plan the lighting schemes agreed upon with the Production creatives
  • In-depth knowledge with CAD based lighting design and per-vis applications (VECTORWORKS preferred)
  • Must have strong leadership skills as well as excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner
  • Must take ownership and accountability for assigned productions
  • Good computer skills, a logical approach and creative eye
  • Must be able to handle the pressures of live programming and limited time constraints
  • Able to work flexible, non-traditional hours including weekends and holidays
  • Available to travel as required
