Summary

The InStyle Deputy Copy Chief copyedits and traffics stories, assists the Copy Chief in managing freelance copy editors, and handles the department in the Copy Chief’s absence. In addition, the Deputy Copy Chief: * Edits for grammar, syntax, usage, style, and tone in accordance with the in-house stylebook, AP, WIT, and other reference books, including English-usage guides and fashion glossaries. * Works closely with top and senior editors to polish text and suggest rewrites/alternatives as needed. * Works closely with the research department to ensure that all facts in assigned stories are accurate and worded in a clear, concise manner. * Traffics all assigned stories and keeps track of status. * Reads all articles that copy chief and freelancer copy editor work on at least once. * Closes stories as needed. * Helps supervise freelancers. * Helps train freelancers. * Helps update style guide. * Updates tracking forms and distribution lists. * Archives stories and handles storage for 12 months.

I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.

The InStyle Deputy Copy Chief copyedits and traffics stories, assists the Copy Chief in managing freelance copy editors, and handles the department in the Copy Chief’s absence. In addition, the Deputy Copy Chief:

  • Edits for grammar, syntax, usage, style, and tone in accordance with the in-house stylebook, AP, WIT, and other reference books, including English-usage guides and fashion glossaries.
  • Works closely with top and senior editors to polish text and suggest rewrites/alternatives as needed.
  • Works closely with the research department to ensure that all facts in assigned stories are accurate and worded in a clear, concise manner.
  • Traffics all assigned stories and keeps track of status.
  • Reads all articles that copy chief and freelancer copy editor work on at least once.
  • Closes stories as needed.
  • Helps supervise freelancers.
  • Helps train freelancers.

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Experience:

Three to five years’ copyediting experience, ideally with a national consumer magazine.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent copyediting skills.

Complete command of grammar and punctuation and acquaintance with major style guides.

Knowledge of MACs, InCopy, and InDesign. 

Ability to handle multiple deadlines while being thorough, accurate, detail-oriented, and diplomatic in a fast-paced environment.

Time-management skills.
