Part-Time Host

WNYC, the nation’s largest public radio station, is seeking an exceptional journalist to deliver on-air newscasts, run a live board, and assist with show production three days a week. The regular schedule will include Saturdays, Sundays and one weekday, but flexibility is required to work, as needed, as a backup host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered Monday through Friday and on public holidays.

 The WNYC newsroom is committed to producing smart, enterprising, and timely news content for the New York City metro area and northern New Jersey. Candidates must demonstrate that they are enthusiastic self-starters with keen news judgment and strong ethics. They are unflappable both on the air and off, adept at writing copy for broadcast and web, running a board, managing story queues and delivering newscasts with warmth and authority. 

The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of the New York City/New Jersey metro area and is also well-versed in national and international news. At every turn, they are on the ground with our audience, thinking about how to keep them informed on events often as they are unfolding. They take an active role in shaping the daily editorial offering. That includes selecting, writing, and stacking stories for hourly newscasts, pitching stories, and occasionally pursuing stories in the field. They are an enthusiastic participant in the camaraderie, creativity, and collaboration that defines the WNYC newsroom.

Responsibilities
  • Anchor live hourly newscasts three days a week, including Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The responsibilities include running a live board, writing and producing newscasts, and assisting with show production
  • Serve as a backup host, as needed, for local broadcasts of Morning Edition and All Things Considered
  • Deliver news, information, and promotional content in a clear and timely manner
  • Monitor the wires, other news outlets, and social media for news developments, responding in a manner that keeps WNYC responsive to the news and audience expectations
  • Write and produce content for newscasts, paying close attention to detail and accuracy
  • Attend and take an active role in news meetings
  • Anchor breaking news and special coverage as needed
  • Host on-air pledge drives as needed
  • Host both in studio (using DAVID, News Boss, and other digital playback technology) and in a remote setting (using a Comrex, VPN technology, and related equipment) 
Additional Information

This is a part time, three day per week role that includes prorated paid time-off benefits including holidays, vacation and sick days.

The regular schedule will include Saturdays, Sundays and one weekday, but flexibility is required to work, as needed, as a backup host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered Monday through Friday and on public holidays. 

Due to the nature of this role work time will be spent in-person at our office and as per NYPR policy you must provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In addition, all facilities are cleaned often, our ventilation system is fully compliant with COVID safety standards, and mask wearing is required. In addition most non-essential employees are currently working remotely therefore very few employees are entering the office. Our team has worked very hard to make this a safe environment for those whose job duties require them to be onsite. 

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.

Requirements

Qualifications
  • At least three years of journalism experience
  • At least two years of on-air hosting experience
  • At least two years of experience running a live board
  • Confident, professional, conversational, accessible on-air delivery
  • Excellent broadcast writing skills
  • Unflappable under pressure and able to quickly pivot as needed 
  • Proven ability to pay close attention to detail and verify accuracy of material for broadcast 
  • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a robust and engaged social media presence
  • Ability to “combo” host, including use of audio editing software and digital playback equipment 
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate the digital environment effectively to make use of research and other tools 
  • Ability to juggle several tasks at once
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment
  • Ability to stay focused and meet deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of hosting and reporting
  • Ability to work effectively and/or interact with the public and with other staff at NYPR
