TheGrio is hiring an Editor who will be responsible for producing compelling content across theGrio (i.e., internet/viral, home page, photo) that will increase audience engagement.
The position will ensure all materials are accurate and of high quality. They will work with the programming team to ensure competitive creative content and best practices. The Editor may also manage a small team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Generate new story ideas from current events, interesting content (photo, video) and breaking news stories within the applicable content area
- Produce stories ideas for articles, slideshows, programming, and other content that are clickable, relevant to the user, and emotionally appealing to users
- Edit content produced by members of the editorial team within the applicable assigned content area
- Manage the content output of a small team of content producers (only for Editor and Associate Editor roles) to ensure consistency in voice and tone of stories produced
- Critically evaluate and determine which stories are most relevant to users and most likely to drive increased traffic from among stories pitched by content partners and produce them
Education, Experience, Certification Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or related field or equivalent work experience
- 3 - 5 years editing experience
- Experience in political news environment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of copyright and facility in securing the rights to images and videos
- A deep understanding of how to produce traffic by way of social media and what drives audience engagement
- Ability to visualize abstract concepts and develop them into story ideas.
- Sharp writing and editing skills
- Knowledge of SEO best practices
- Ability to craft headlines that engage audiences
- Proficient in Adobe Photoshop
- Responsive to breaking news
- High comfort level with various content management systems
- Knowledge of HTML
- Ability to direct work and lead teams through content development
Must be willing and able to work flexible hours as needed including weekends, holidays, and overnights, under tight deadline pressure, occasionally with little or no warning as needed for essential publication
