Selected Shorts, the acclaimed weekly public radio broadcast, can be heard on stations throughout the US (including Top 10 market stations) and is also distributed as a popular podcast. With a 35+ year history, Selected Shorts celebrates literature with great actors transporting audiences through the magic of fiction, one short story at a time. Selected Shorts connects its listeners to a world with a rich diversity of voices from literature, film, theater, and comedy. The show is produced by Symphony Space in New York City.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Senior Producer of the Selected Shorts radio program and podcast will be a key player in the evolution of this storied nationally broadcast public radio program and popular podcast as we enter a new phase of growth.

The right candidate for this role is excited by the creative challenge of building upon a legacy brand, has a strong sense of ownership, and is passionate about making great audio.

Qualified candidates will ideally have a track record of success producing for national radio or podcasts, a highly tuned ear for editing, experience working in a deadline-driven environment, and will enjoy being a valued collaborator.

Position requires weekly collaborative meetings at Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway New York City, and remote work.

Reports to: Director of Broadcast & Literary Initiatives

Compensation: $40,000-45,000 per year (25 hours per week)

Location: New York City Onsite, and Remote work

Requirements

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Cut, edit, and mix one-hour episodes of Selected Shorts for broadcast on national public radio stations and via podcast. Audition and fine-tune the radio program/podcast while working with the Mix Engineer to ensure the final audio mix meets rigorous quality standards.
  • Fact-check and verify scripts, pronouncers, and copy for the radio host. Collaborate with radio host and Selected Shorts’ team to develop scripting ideas. Help facilitate interviews and host tracking. Participate in ongoing evaluation and updating of processes, strategies, guidelines, and templates related to audio production.
  • Update archival episodes for rebroadcast and edit audio in ProTools.
  • Produce and review promotional materials, including promo spots for radio stations, show teases, and other audio collateral as needed. Upload and publish the radio program to Content Depot and podcast to digital distribution platforms as needed. Review digital analytics and apply insights to evolving understanding of tiered audiences.
DESIRED SKILLS & TRAITS
  • Demonstrated expertise in editing and mixing audio with a desire to maintain the highest standards of audio production. Deep understanding of sound design and music mixing as used to create and enhance the live storytelling experience. 5+ years using Avid ProTools.
  • Experience working with audio recorded in front of a live audience a plus.
  • Detail-oriented, comfortable with organizational tasks and problem-solving. Ability to manage multiple short- and long-term deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ambition to grow listenership and interest in all ways Selected Shorts reaches the audience, including our web and social media presence.
  • Equally comfortable working within a collaborative environment and working independently to move the production process forward.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • A passion for fiction is a plus.
