Job Description

I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.

Martha Stewart Living, the iconic and award-winning lifestyle magazine, is seeking a senior editor with a minimum of 5 years editorial experience and a background and interest in home (including decorating, organizing, cleaning, and care). The ideal candidate wants to thrive in a creative, collaborative environment; loves generating ideas; excels at packaging stories in clever, engaging ways; and is a deft writer and editor. An interest in other subjects, such as health, travel, books, crafting, and all things Martha, is a plus.

This senior editor will:
  • Oversee and help create Living’s monthly Good Things section, working closely with our home, style, and food editors to field ideas, devise a cohesive lineup, and assign and edit the copy.
  • Partner with the home and style editors to shape home decorating, cleaning, organizing, and crafting stories that are clever and inspiring and celebrate personal style and quality over trends. 
  • Write, assign, and edit several front-of-book and well stories in each issue, ranging from practical service pieces (how to deep-clean your kitchen) to gorgeous holiday features (stunningly spooky pumpkins).
  • Seek real homes for the feature well that represent diverse people, locations, and ways of life; and pitch upcoming home-design books for us to excerpt.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with top writers and experts.
  • Work with our digital team to expand magazine content online via photo galleries, how-to instructions, and more.
  • Represent Living in the home market and at corporate events.
II. Essential Job Functions

Partners with the home editor to pitch, assign, and edit 1-2 front-of-book stories in each issue, ranging from housekeeping guides to holiday décor projects. Assign and edit or write 1-2 well features in each issue, including real-home profiles and holiday decorating stories. Scouts homes to feature in MSL and design books to excerpt.

30%

Oversees and helps create Living’s signature Good Things section, which entails developing the monthly lineup with the home, style, and food editors, keeping the team on task from pitch to shoot, and assigning and editing the text.

10%

Works closely with the MSL digital team to share ideas and supplement print content online.

Represents Living in the home market, at corporate events, and in the media.

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree

Experience:

Minimum of five years editorial experience, with a focus on home content, including design, care, entertaining, and organizing. An interest in other lifestyle topics, such as crafting, gardening, food, books, and all things Martha, is a plus.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent writing, editing, top-editing, and display-writing skills. Able to capture the smart and spirited voice of Living. Adept at generating clever, original ideas, and translating ideas from home, style, and food editors into timely and cohesive story pitches and lineups. Strong story packager. Proactively seeks diverse new contributors and experts and cultivates strong relationships with them. Works nimbly and efficiently within the editorial team and with ad sales and marketing.
