Summary

The Senior News Editor for the Night team will be responsible for assigning and editing stories, handling breaking news and programming the homepage after hours, working a shift of 2:00-10:00pm PT/5pm – 1am EST. The editor will work in concert with another senior editor (on a staggered shift) who will bridge the daytime operation, fueled by People’s 16 verticals, to the after-hours night shift, focused strictly on news and the most important traffic driving content, staffed by a small team of writers. Need to be comfortable assigning and overseeing the production of a large volume of stories (30+) across all of People’s content areas, from crime, human interest and politics, to entertainment, royals and lifestyle. Prioritizing well and programming content that will drive strong traffic are key. Strong editing skills and an ability to coach up young talent is necessary. Will need to be comfortable working with the team of lawyers on publishing legally complicated content. And in the case of urgent breaking news, need to be comfortable rolling up your sleeves and writing something yourself to get it up quickly.

Essential Job Functions
  • Finding, overseeing, assigning and editing a large volume of stories daily.
  • Collaborating with other teams on developing news stories to ensure they’re executed in a way that accounts for sensitivities.
  • Writing news yourself as necessary.
  • Collaborating with legal team on vetting of stories.  
Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements 

Education:

BA or BS

Experience:

7 years experience working in a high volume, digital news operation, with at least 2 years of editing experience.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong organizational skills and a proven ability to work independently.

• Strong writing and editing skills, impeccable journalistic standards and attention to detail.

• Ability to respond quickly to breaking news and understand how to prioritize urgent vs. non urgent content.

• An understanding of SEO and analytics.

• Strong management skills.

• Ability to work with anybody: this role requires a lot of liaising with many different departments.
