Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, Communications, you will have a strong sense of urgency and energetically pursue multi-platform PR opportunities for the broadcast, talent, and news divisions. This person will initiate and plan the essential communications and brand development across television, cable, radio, online, trades, entertainment outlets, major newspapers, and on social media. This will also include writing press releases, and pitch stories, generating briefing notes, writing press plans, and assembling clip packets.

The candidate will also help coordinate rating publicity and collaborate with the team on breaking news and special events. The ideal candidate should have some industry media relationships and experience in a fast-paced setting. The candidate must be an excellent teammate and detailed with the capability to self-manage and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Initiates, plans, and performs publicity efforts for the "CBS Evening News," and provides support across the Washington, D.C. bureau on communications efforts.
  • Work closely with the communications team, as well as anchors, correspondents, and executives to implement short- and long-range strategic public relations initiatives.
  • Promote show content, digital initiatives, and editorial achievements; communicate ratings; help build talent profiles and strategically position the brand.
  • Maintain strong contacts with print, radio, digital, national, and trade media.
  • Pitch ideas and create promotional opportunities for talent and programs.
  • Coordinate media interviews, photo shoots, and publicity opportunities.
  • Generate press materials, including press releases, bios, talking points, tweets, and clips.
  • Generate rating publicity and strategically position day-to-day editorial achievements.
  • Monitor competitive environment and industry trends.
  • Fill-in publicist for "Face the Nation" and assist with overall PR needs for the Washington, D.C. bureau as needed
  • Assist the department with all publicity efforts for breaking news, special events, and publicity campaigns
  • Help maintain talent/executive public event calendar.
  • Staff key anchors and executives at outside events and public opportunities.
Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of media relations and communications experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related subject area
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Willingness to travel/work weekends with short notice
  • Experience in news and journalism is a strong plus
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to excel in a fast-paced environment
  • Validated experience collaborating with executives, talent, and media
  • Must be proactive and strategic
  • Steady track record of securing coverage
  • Ability to multi-task and work across multiple teams and projects
