Job Description

TheGrio seeks an experienced wire editor or assignment editor with the news judgment to identify and curate news that will arrest, inform, delight and empower Black America. A highly-qualified candidate has experience assessing digital content performance, observing audience behavior, leveraging the aforementioned to identify aggregation source material and ideating original story assignments while responding efficiently to breaking news and managing an editorial staff with varying levels of competency. TheGrio’s assignment editor must be a combination of an air traffic controller, editorial tactician and battlefield resource manager. Additionally, qualified candidates for the assignment editor position have three to five years of experience managing a daily print staff as a metro, wire or city desk editor or as an assignment editor with a news-focused digital newsroom. The role is not suitable for applicants with experience managing the publication of entertainment or lifestyle content or who has worked exclusively as a broadcast assignment editor.

Adhering to foundational journalistic practices such as ensuring balance, including context and avoiding defamation in words or images, the assignment editor is a newsroom leader and a bulwark against shortcuts and risks. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Remain abreast of events, policies and leaders relevant to the global Black experience
  • Identify and assess quickly which stories merit original reporting or aggregating and assign to staff based on urgency and skill
  • Maintain a constant publishing flow of content throughout the news cycle by recognizing editing or reporting bottlenecks and adjusting assignments and staff resources as needed
  • Prioritize quickly what stories and assignments to delay or cancel based on developing news
  • Participate in coverage plans for large news events
  • Ideate and discover original story ideas
  • Maintain the staffing schedule to ensure adequate coverage and fill empty shifts with existing or freelance staff
  • Provide story and narrative direction 
  • Craft original, engaging, accurate digital headlines
  • Update theGrio homepage frequently throughout the news cycle
  • Ensure only licensed, quality photos accompany stories and assist in procuring such images as needed
  • Provide reporting direction to shape narratives
  • Adhere to the journalistic tenets of balance, fairness, context and accuracy
  • Participate in content planning and brainstorming
  • Be available to assist with news production on weekends and evenings as needed for essential publication
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field required
  • Collaborative and collegial contributor to an affirming, respectful, celebratory workplace
  • Ability to identify and ideate stories germane to the Black community efficiently and effectively
  • Skilled in offering story direction to support a narrative and perspective
  • Deep experience discerning hyperbole, detecting fallacy and seeking facts before making assignments
  • Knowledge and passion for Black culture, history and current events
  • A minimum of four years reporting and writing for a daily newspaper or digital news outlet and thee to five years working as an assignment editor at same. The role is not suitable for applicants with lifestyle, entertainment or blogging experience. The role is also not suitable for applicants with only broadcast experience.
  • Proven record of meeting deadlines, particularly for breaking news
  • Exceptional news judgment rooted in factual reporting and balance
  • Stellar leadership and coaching skills, particularly in challenging situations
  • Knowledge of digital news best practices and production
  • Familiarity with using a CMS
  • Previous experience covering judicial, legislative, education, corrections, police, law enforcement or municipal government agencies. The role is not suitable for applicants with lifestyle, health or entertainment backgrounds
  • Strong knowledge of defamation and copyright law 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong command of grammar, syntax and spelling
  • Self-starting, self-sufficient and innovative problem-solver
  • Successful completion of editing and assignment editor assessments
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as news or colleague absences require
Position Salary range: $100k - 120k
