Job Description

Vox is a user’s guide to the news produced by the reporters, and subject matter experts who know it best. Today, Explained – our flagship podcast – is an audio expression of that mission: a daily news explainer that is both relentlessly reported and ground-breaking in its sonics and storytelling. We’re looking for an experienced and versatile audio producer with a track record of producing compelling news stories to join the team of our ambitious and innovative daily news explainer.

We are looking for an editorial-minded and news-driven producer. They help conceptualize each day’s programming: coming up with smart pitches, booking and interviewing guests, constructing the segments, and editing and scoring episodes. The right person for this position is delighted by the idea of innovating on foundational news formats like the standard two-way, and has demonstrated a knack for taking unexpected approaches to curiosity-driven stories, and loves making audio sound beautiful.

What you'll do:
  • Research timely and distinctive story segments and write program copy
  • Explain the news of the day clearly and respectfully — never underestimating the audience’s intelligence or overestimating their information
  • Assemble research prep and write host questions
  • Locate and book diverse sources and interviewees
  • Edit episodes using ProTools
  • Scoring and script editing
WHO YOU ARE
We are looking for a voracious learner and audio producer who finds themselves obsessed with domestic and global news, and enjoys digging into everything from the inner workings of the Biden White House to the latest developments in lab-grown meats to the debates over gentrification. The ideal candidate has a special interest or beat that they follow regularly, as well as a wide range of general interests.

What you’ll bring:
  • Significant experience creating audio stories as part of a fast-moving, collaborative team under deadline pressure
  • Proficiency in audio editing/mixing in ProTools
  • A portfolio that demonstrates an ear for great tape and inventive approaches to audio storytelling
  • A highly organized and dogged approach to landing bookings on a quick turnaround
  • Experience scripting and editing compelling, curiosity-driven stories or segments
  • A track record of developing stories that draw on diverse perspectives/source lists
  • A passion for explanatory journalism
  • Creativity and a desire to be innovative
If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
