Are you passionate about helping people and organizations thrive?  KNKX is seeking a Full –time Director of Content to lead our news room.  The Director of Content (DOC) supports KNKX’s mission to deliver jazz, blues and news that inspires, enlightens and connects our community. The position is also focused on the station’s vision to grow our audience and become a more inclusive organization that brings joy, meaning, and understanding into people’s lives.

The DOC plays a pivotal role in shaping and delivering high-quality, memorable content to our audience, and is responsible for overseeing the development, production, and distribution of content that connects emotionally with listeners in Puget Sound, and to jazz audiences worldwide across multiple platforms.  The DOC reports to the President and General Manager, and serves on the Senior Leadership Team. You will be empowered to problem solve and create unique to solutions to everyday newsroom challenges as well as direct all production activities, including underwriting, promos, imaging & voice-tracking.  The right person must have conflict resolution skills. Some of what you will be doing:
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive content strategy that aligns with the station's mission, vision and strategic plan.
  • Foster a sense of community by producing content that reflects the diversity and interests of the local and regional communities we serve.
  • Directs current programming and creates with team member’s new content for distribution on-air, online, on-demand and on stage.
  • Ensure that all content meets high editorial standards, adheres to legal and ethical guidelines, and is consistent with the station's brand and occasionally serves as an on-air fill-in host.
 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • As part of the KNKX Senior Leadership Team, participates in policy, performance and workplace culture development.
  • Direct staff, including the News Director, Music Director, Production Manager, Online Managing Editor and Director of Community Outreach & Events.
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship to team members to support their professional growth and development.
  • Coordinate with other departments, such as development, and administration to ensure seamless content integration and cross-promotion.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of the on-air pledge drives and is utilized as a pitcher and/or producer. 
  • Foster strong relationships with external partners, including content providers, other public media stations and community organizations.
  • Oversees all community outreach and event activities including partnerships that help to advance the station’s vision.  
  • Stay attuned to audience preferences, trends, and needs, and use this knowledge to shape content strategies..
Financial and Operational Oversight
  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and manage the content budget and ensure efficient allocation of resources and adherence to budgetary constraints.
  • Strategizes, analyzes and implements activities to increase radio ratings and online analytics. 
  • Monitor and analyze key performance metrics to evaluate the success of content initiatives and make data-driven decisions.
  • Initiates, interprets and implements all programming research.
  • Monitors KNKX compliance with FCC guidelines.
  • Station contact for all national program producers including, NPR, APM and PRI.
  • May assume responsibilities for General Manager in his/her absence.
  • Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of news, jazz and blues programming and how to effectively present it to an audience across multiple platforms.
  • Knowledge of audio production, promotions, events and program schedule building.
  • Understanding of the evolving media landscape, including latest research on listening habits, platforms and devices and ability to analysis and explain the story behind the numbers to staff, the Board and the Community Advisory Council.
  • Cultural competency to connect with our region’s widely diverse communities.
  • Knowledge of NPR News standards.
  • A person that is action-oriented, entrepreneurial and adaptable, with innovative approaches to programming.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement programming activities and work effectively with a timeline.
  • Ability to supervise, train and evaluate employees.
  • Must have the ability and commitment to exercise vigorous and sensitive managerial leadership.
  • Excellent writing, speaking and outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with coworkers and to work effectively in collaboration across teams.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible experience in broadcasting, or in creating and directing content is required with a significant amount at the management level. Specific experience in public broadcasting is also beneficial.
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, media, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Proven track record of successful content strategy development, implementation, and audience engagement.

Compensation: $110,000-$130,000
