Job Description

Job Summary:
Working in conjunction with Disney Theatrical Group (DTG) producers in New York, the Director, Production, APAC is responsible for all elements of theatrical stage play production for DTG across the APAC region.

In collaboration with DTG NY production and distribution teams, the role is responsible for leading and running large scale musical theatre events, including self-produced titles and licensed productions and tours across Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia, China and Japan.

The role is responsible for the the day-to-day running of APAC Production teams. This includes overseeing and managing senior staff, cast and crew; developing and maintaining key vendor relationships; management of the internal casting process & sourcing key creative local talent. Strong commercial and financial acumen is critical to the role in order to achieve regional and local budget targets and align with corporate objectives.

This role is critical to ensuring the smooth running and success of DTG Productions across the APAC region.

Responsibilities:

Production Operations
  • Lead the APAC theatrical stage play production strategy, ensuring productions are appropriately resourced and supported and that work is executed to an excellent standard
  • Provide strong and effective people management and leadership to relevant APAC Production and Creative teams, providing coaching, mentoring and development planning
  • Provide day-to-day management (with DTP producers and other key personnel in NY) of Company, Stage Management and Creative teams to oversee staffing and show related matters (technical difficulties with the show, possible show stops and decision making on next steps, cast emergencies/injuries etc)
  • Collaborate with relevant New York, HR, Legal and Local Production teams teams on any employment related issues throughout the employment lifecycle, including company onboarding; implementation of Company policies and procedures; conflict resolution and managing complex employee related issues.
  • Manage the recruitment of all crew staff for productions (thorough technical knowledge and understanding of job roles and specific skills required is essential)
  • Ensure any local legal regulations and guidelines are adhered to, including those related to the employment of children
  • Review and approve weekly payroll
  • Oversee the travel of all members of the Production Department and support the travel plans of US staff, in conjunction with the NY office, across the Region
  • Source and negotiate rehearsal venue hire, as required across the Region
  • Source and negotiate company housing requirements, as require across the Region
Casting
  • Partner with Creative Teams and Casting Agents to devise appropriate casting lists, requiring significant knowledge of talent pools
  • Overseas negotiations for all performers, including leading and managing the internal casting process, participation in all final auditions and discussions with Creative Teams
  • Manages cast appraisals and casting conversations with associate and local teams
  • Manage relationships effectively with external agencies in discussing actors’ employment contracts and negotiating terms
  • Oversee and execute entire work visa process for new and current cast members for the production
Unions
  • In partnership with DTP NY (and local legal teams, as relevant), manage contract negotiations with appropriate actor, musician and crew unions (or employment bodies) across the region
  • Be the main point of contact for relevant Unions across the region, in relation to production discussions, partnering with NY and local legal/HR teams, as appropriate
  • Retain consultation and advisory relationship with key industrial relations partners
Theatre and Vendor Relations
  • Manage a succession of site surveys for the production across APAC, visiting possible venues and establishing good working practices with the theatre staff
  • Provide accurate, timely information to ensure theatre bookings are suitable and the timing is appropriate for physical productions
  • Working in partnership with financial and legal teams in New York, manage relationships with theatre owners or delegates on all matters affecting venues and venue agreements
  • Working in partnership with financial and legal teams in New York, manage negotiations with other key external vendors on relevant agreements, including lighting and sound
  • Liaise with theatre management on settlement issues and discrepancies
Licensed Production Oversight
  • Working directly with DTP NY production and distribution team, production-related concerns for licensed productions and tours across Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, China and Japan
  • As required, oversee casting approvals of licensed productions
  • As required and under the direction of DTG-NY, act as on-site DTG representative for all matters pertaining to oversight of licensee production elements and relationships
  • As appropriate, coordinate with International Distribution teams in NY
Leadership

  • Develop and share leadership vision for teams and ensure they are given the tools and necessary skill to enable them to deliver their objectives as effectively as possible.
  • Ensure the team receives all the support necessary to enable them to perform effectively in their roles
Finance
  • Working with finance lead, develop financial strategies to ensure productions meet AOP/local targets
  • Agree budget targets, forecasts and future show commercial viability with financial leads in New York
  • Working closely with the Technical Director and financial leads in New York, implement and manage Production, Operating and location movebudgets
Marketing
  • Partner with Marketing, Sales and Ticketing stakeholders to ensure profit optimization and to keep creative resources aligned with key marketing objectives and sales/budget goals.
Special Events and PR
  • Manage all requests for extraordinary external/internal event requests, e.g. filming, recording or unique industry opportunities
  • Manage most of the key PR opportunities with cast appearances, hospital visits using cast in full costume and puppet elements, meet and greet arrangements, educational initiatives, television appearances and establish close links with the PR agencies to manage schedules effectively
Experience required:
  • Significant experience required in all aspects of general management for large scale musical productions (experience working across in the APAC regional not essential but highly regarded)
  • Comprehensive experience working in a theatrical environment with strong working knowledge of industry practices
  • Significant experience managing diverse and sizeable teams
  • Ability to negotiate using past experiences within theatrical fields to provide expertise
  • Ability to build strong relationships, internally and externally, establishing partnerships and commercial relationships within the industry to uphold the Disney brand and ensure the smooth running of DTP Productions
