Job Description

Show Systems Studio is where we produce the magic! Our processes and tool sets take us from concept design or mockups to full on production, assembly and instillation.

Illusion Makers are responsible for the surface development of our Audio Animatronic figures. This includes 3D printing, fabrication, assembly and clean-up, in addition to developing figure shells and skins to ensure they meet the creative intent and overall look of the show.

The Illusion Maker will report to the Illusion Production Manager in California.

What You Will Do:
  • Input digital design of 3D printed shells and tooling for complicated Audio Animatronic figures and parts.
  • Fabrication, assembly and clean-up of 3D printed, fiberglass, cast and vacuum form parts.
  • Fabrication and clean-up of silicone skins
  • Train our park maintenance partners in the installation, removal, handling and care of the Audio Animatronic figure shells, skins, props, etc.
  • Test, evaluate, repair and modify figure shells, parts, skins and tooling as needed.
  • Craft and fabricate plastic parts for longevity and with maintenance in mind.
  • Problem solve, mock-up and test solutions for complex plastic part issues.
  • Document and archive shell, skin and tooling digital files per project requirements
  • Partner with the Figure Finishing, Mechanical and Electrical teams to ensure that the shells and skins are part of the overall integrated figure system.
  • Collaborate with Dimensional Design’s digital and physical sculptors to ensure shell clearances, thickness, shapes, offsets, etc., are all considered during the sculpt and model development phase.
  • Input tooling, shell and skin estimates and Surface Development design and production schedules.
  • Adhere to established schedules and budgets.
  • Input sourcing and ordering materials
  • Willingness to travel (including internationally) as required.
  • Input the development of standards and guidelines related to Surface Development products and deliverables.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • 2+ years of experience in Audio Animatronic figure tooling, shell and skin design and fabrication or 3D printing and clean-up.
  • Basic understanding of Audio Animatronic figures and the figure production pipeline
  • Knowledge and experience in Solidworks
  • Understanding of Design X, Magics and Rhino
  • Solid understanding plastic and skin material properties
  • Understanding of how to read and evaluate material Safety Data Sheets and Technical Data Sheets
  • 3D printing experience, knowledge of processes, materials, and 3D printed part fabrication.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other fields.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Experience operating and maintaining 3D printers.
  • Knowledge of fabricating matrix molds (tooling) and epoxy mold (tooling)
  • This position is located in Glendale, CA.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree, trade school or equivalent experience preferred, but not required.
The hiring range for this position in California is $70,000 to $93,800 per year.
