Job Description

Charged with the responsibility of shaping stories essential to support the well-being, rights, livelihood, protection, joy, financial security and success of Black people, the person in this role will provide direction on story framing, narrative structure, balance, source development and journalistic integrity. Daily, the line editor will coach writers, edit aggregated and original copy and provide options for sourcing images.

This position is based in Atlanta, Washington DC, Los Angeles or New York

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Line edit original and aggregated news stories and opinion articles
  • Ensure copy focuses on the significance of news events and includes context 
  • Provide direction on required sourcing, attribution and comments to adhere to the journalistic tenets of balance, fairness and accuracy
  • Fact check copy
  • Assist writers in developing strong, logical, engaging narratives
  • Balance the urgent and the critical to ensure timely publishing of breaking and scheduled content
  • Craft headlines and captions as needed
  • Participate in content planning and brainstorming
  • Contribute to story ideation by monitoring news reports and social media
  • Identify growth areas for writing staff and assist in coaching and development
  • Be available to assist with news production as needed on weekends and evenings as needed for essential publication
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Knowledge and passion for Black culture, history and current events
  • A minimum of eight years of experience editing news copy for daily newspaper or digital media outlet
  • Proven record of editing breaking, enterprise, investigative and feature news
  • Deep knowledge of digital news production and multimedia journalism
  • Deep knowledge of judicial, legislative, policing and municipal governance procedures
  • Ability to direct reporters to reliable alternate information sources when met with obstinate officials
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a writing coach
  • Strong knowledge of defamation and copyright law with a firm understanding of rights and clearances
  • Ability to edit quickly and accurately
  • A body of work that demonstrates irresistible story ideation and creativity
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong command of grammar, syntax and spelling
  • Collaborative and collegial contributor to an affirming, celebratory workplace
  • Self-starting, self-sufficient, resourceful leader who is an innovative problem-solver
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as news or colleague absences require
  • Successful completion of an editing and writing assessment
