Job Description

This researcher works in the Political Unit to provide high-level research, generate story ideas, report information, and produce content for all of CNN's platforms on the 2024 elections. This researcher will play a unique and integral role in the network's political and election coverage, helping to produce editorial guidance to be shared across the network to bolster CNN’s linear and digital coverage. The job requires fast, meticulous work on daily and long-term projects at once. In addition to daily news coverage, this researcher will be called upon to provide research for election nights, town halls, presidential debates, political conventions, and other high-profile CNN special events.

This is a project-based position through January 31, 2025.

Your Role Accountabilities
  • Provide detailed research and analysis of political information to reporters and producers
  • Review stories and scripts from reporters and show graphics utilizing political data
  • Research and report on the details of the American political system, including areas like redistricting and election administration   
  • Help Political Unit research operation in preparing for special events, including town halls, debates, and political conventions
  • Assist with planning of election coverage, generating story ideas and providing editorial guidance to the network
Your Qualifications & Experience...
  • One to three years of experience in national or major media markets is required, with special consideration given to those with a background in network or cable news research and production.
  • Keen news judgment, a love of politics and journalism, as well as knowledge of news production
  • Experience with primary source reporting
  • Interest in political and electoral data, but advanced analytical or statistical training is not essential
  • The ability to be calm under pressure and to excel when facing a deadline in the high stakes environment of a network newsroom.
  • Attention to detail and dedication to precision
  • Creative, critical, and strategic thinking 
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to track a project over a long period of time
  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours and travel when necessary
