Job Description

This position is responsible for the mock-up, design, production, installation, test/adjust and turnover of all special effects work for multiple attractions and projects. This entails efforts both as an individual and working with leaders of Special Effects design and production staff.

The Special Effects Designer will assist in leading the efforts of special effect delivery for one or more attractions/projects.
  • Assist overall project team in scope development from concept stage through close-out
  • Concept, design and delivery of all required feasibility mockups
  • Preparation and delivery of documentation to establish FX scope on projects.
  • Planning of overall design/production strategy.
  • Partner with all subject areas to ensure internal/external requirements are met
  • Field installation
  • Maintenance and operations training, along with post opening support.
This position will report to the Special Effects Designer Manager.

Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Ability to concept & craft special effects required to support the show,
  • Use all appropriate creative and technical methods to complete the project.
  • Ability to design, produce, install, maintain and fixing theme park special effects equipment.
  • Able to derive the most effective plan to achieve the stated goals.
  • Project management to ensure goals are met.
  • Knowledge of installed Disney theme park attractions from a technical and aesthetic show perspective.
  • Knowledge of related technical subject areas and their application to the creation of special effects, optics, mechanics, materials processes etc.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Industrial design, manufacturing, operations and maintenance background with special effects and projection system design experience.
  • Ability to connect with all levels of project and maintenance/operations staff and work with all related parties to ensure the technical and creative aspects of the show Special effects and projection are achieved efficiently in terms creative requirements and in the most efficient.
  • Exhibit proficiency in the job requirements and responsibilities, along with the ability to lead some budget items, schedule and design deliverables.
  • Ability to communicate well with peers in other subject areas and report appropriately to different levels of management.
Education
  • 3-5 years in Disney (or equivalent) theme park special effects' experience.
  • Knowledge of special effects/projection equipment, materials, processes and vendors.
  • B.A., B.S. or equivalent valued but not required.
  • Theatrical training also desirable.
The hiring range for this position in California is $92,800 to $124,400 per year.
