Job Description

WTKR/WGNT, The E.W. Scripps station in Norfolk, Virginia is looking for an experienced and highly creative Specialty Photojournalist to join the team. The ideal candidate has strong news judgement, excellent visual storytelling skills, a willingness to work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment. The Specialty Photojournalist will play a key role to further our station’s mission to tell stories that are important to the people who live, work and play in Coastal Virginia and Northeast North Carolina. WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Capture, create and edit visual content with a focus on special projects for multiple platforms, consistent with the station’s content strategy
  • Edit audio, video, photos, text, still and motion graphics in a manner that tells a compelling story
  • Work closely and cooperatively with field crews, assignment desk, broadcast and digital producers, managers, video editors and production team
  • Operate and maintain live equipment including microwave, satellite and related news gathering equipment
  • Assist newsroom personnel with story creation and development
  • Conduct interviews in the field 
  • Utilize a variety of cameras, technologies and advanced lighting techniques to create visually compelling stories, including but not limited to DVC Pro cameras, Hi-8, lipstick cameras, drone cameras, 3-point lighting, soft box, backlighting and two camera interview lighting
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in posting content to station's digital platforms
  • Knowledge and demonstration of creativity, editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws
  • Drive company vehicle for business purposes
  • Perform other duties as assigned
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
  • Generally, 5+ years of experience in related field preferred
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
  • Advanced knowledge of lighting and non-linear editing equipment, including Final Cut Pro or similar system
  • Solid understanding of multimedia file formats and strong computer skills
  • Proficiency with live microwave and satellite truck operation.
  • Knowledge and demonstration of creativity, editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws
  • Must be able to multitask, meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Must be a certified drone pilot or on the path to becoming a certified drone pilot
  • Must be a strong written and verbal communicator, a team player and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required. In addition, proof of insurance and liability coverage may be required
